How to clean the TORS Button located on the Carb Rack

By fourbarrel

Tools needed

- Phillips and flat screwdrivers

-          vise grip pliers

-          small flat screwdriver or fine blade knife

-          needle nose or regular slip joint pliers

-          sand paper

-          contact cleaner

  1. Remove air box

- this will require different steps depending on sled model

  1. Remove carbs from intake boots

- slacken lock nut on throttle cable and turn cable out of bracket and remove cable from carb linkage

- do the same with the choke cable or you can remove the other end from the dash panel to save having to mess with the cable adjustment

- turn off carb heater valve

-          use pliers to slide clamps down on coolant lines from carbs, have plugs handy so you don’t lose too much coolant

-          slide clamps off fuel lines and pull the hoses off carbs

-          use Phillips screw driver to loosen clamps around carbs on intake boots and pop carb rack out

  1. Mark idle screw and count turns to remove, cw if memory serves me correctly
  2. Use a set of vise grips to lock the throttle rod open, makes the removal of the TORS button easier. Caution here, use something to line the jaws of the pliers with so you don’t mark up the rod, I used a piece of old inner tube.
  3. Turn the idle screw until the TORS button pops off it. Caution here too as it will pop off, there is a heavy spring there and be sure you count the turns so you don’t mess up your idle too much
  4. TORS button disassembly

-          remove rubber boot over button

-          use a small flat screw driver to pop the tab locks on 2 sides of the button but be careful as there is a small spring inside so don’t lose it

-          carefully separate the top and bottom parts being mindful of the spring

-          this will expose the contacts, use contact cleaner or rubbing alcohol to get rid of any dirt or corrosion

-          use a small piece of fine sandpaper or a knife to rough up the contacts, this will also help to remove any buildup of gunk

  1. Assembly of button is reverse of step 6
  2. Line up tors button on idle screw and turn until you count the correct number back on
  3. Install carbs back on the engine, put the air box back in place and hopefully your TORS system will work like it’s supposed to.
